SUGGESTED CREDO FOR UK LABOUR PARTY MEMBERS

(Observing Party Rule Book)

We accept and recognise that our official and practical language, whether written or spoken, is the English language.

We also accept and recognise - that for all current and prospective party members - English may not be our first language or that our varying educational standards or our varying social groupings CAN generate a use of language that is peculiar to our own personal view and own perspective of the world.

Therefore we believe the Labour Party should communicate to its membership - and the UK electorate - using a language that is as universal as possible in its clarity, and in a way that avoids unnecessary ambiguity and misunderstanding.

Therefore for me........

1.  I believe the purpose of the Labour Party is to maintain a presence in Parliament and to govern according to its agreed principles

2.  I believe I must accept the programme, policy and principles of the party

3.  I believe that by the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more than we achieve alone

4.  I believe we should create for each of us the means to realise our true potential

5.  I believe in a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few

6.  I believe the rights we enjoy reflect the duties we owe

7.  I believe in a spirit of solidarity, tolerance and respect

8.  I believe in a dynamic economy in which the enterprise of the market and the rigour of competition are joined with the forces of partnership and co-operation

9.  I believe in a just and lawful society which nurtures families, promotes equality of opportunity, and delivers people from the tyranny of poverty

10. I believe in an open democracy where fundamental human rights are guaranteed

11. I believe in a healthy environment, which we protect, enhance and hold in trust for future generations

12. I believe in a commitment to the defence and security of the British people

13. I believe the work of the party shall be under the direction and control of party conference, which shall itself be subject to the constitution and standing orders of the party, which shall itself be interpreted by the NEC, which shall itself show support and loyalty to the elected leadership and other elected party officers

14. I still believe in securing - for the workers by hand or by brain - the full fruits of their industry. Although, I also believe this fundamental belief could be expressed in a way that it is more current and easier for us all to understand.
